Bringing Hassle-Free Access to Mental Wellness Resources
Through timely and relevant programming and awareness campaigns, it is our hope that mental health will become a known quantity within Black communities, helping the Foundation achieve a critical mass of Black self-care advocates and allies nationwide.
Current BLHF programming includes Mental Wellness Support - five (5) free therapy sessions; BLHF Hangouts: Integrative Wellness and Psychoeducational Sessions, HBCU Wellness Wednesdays, Joy Pop-Up Salons; and Boris L. Henson Foundation Self-Care Wellness Pods.
Mental Wellness Support Program (MWSP); MWSP offers five free mental health therapy sessions for individuals and families experiencing life-changing events, and everyday struggles as well as for those experiencing an exacerbation of stress, anxiety, depression, and/ or hopelessness. The program is free for registered participants by licensed, culturally competent clinicians from our network. Enrollment is available on a first-come, first-serve basis during periods of planned open enrollment.
Providing easy, accessible segues to conversations about mental wellness for all ages. Our modalities can reach large numbers of people at the same time. Integrated wellness sessions are proven ways to experience joy. Yoga, meditation, art, dance, and sound therapy are proven detressors and can evoke a sense of peace and balance. This program also offers 5 free sessions to those who attend classes at participating integrative wellness studios.
These groups are led by culturally competent mental health professionals. Our Hangouts address common topics among groups and involve guided, supportive conversations, encouraging listening and the sharing of experiences, specific to the community we serve. Hangouts are curated for all age groups and all genders.
This program of service for students at HBCUs brings the modalities of our integrative wellness Hangouts to HBCU campuses across the nation.
Each institution is offered an opportunity to choose one Wednesday per month to focus on pure relaxation, exploration, and introspection and the elements of fitness through the ‘mind-body’ connection, led by an integrative wellness practitioner.
Our Joy Pop-Up Salons take place in beauty salons, barbershops, and community centers, and are BLHF-curated events that provide tools and resources to transform the idea and provision of mental health.
Barbershops and beauty salons are significant to Black culture and are often places where we can feel safe, be our authentic selves, and express what is most important to us.
A part of the Boris L. Henon Foundation's Self-Care Wellness Pods is restorative wellness also provides what we all need - REST and RESTORATION. This portion of our Self-Care Wellness Pods offers a much-needed respite from the daily stresses of life. 50% of insomnia cases are associated with depression, anxiety, or psychological stress.
